Was Elmer Fudd a Zapatista?

Serena (my wife) found an abandoned religious poster and brought it home. We decided I might as well treat it as “found art” and work with it. The results include Elmer Fudd in full Emiliano Zapata regalia, as well as Bugs Bunny in drag… enjoy!

Ink & brush on “found print”, about 30″x36″. Like it? It’s yours for a mere $1250! Shipped insured.

A New Painting – Flying Saucers & Hockney?

My latest painting Capri & Saucer 36″ x 36″ acrylic on canvas

As a cartoonist, I usually paint “small”, 11″ x 14″ being a favorite size. This three-foot square canvas is a whole different animal to tame!

Serena (my wife) commented that this painting reminded her of the work of David Hockney. I’ll take that as a compliment!

Interested parties can email Steve.

Offered at $895 (includes shipping/insurance).

Critters, Plants & Bugs: Kids Love Nature Science

Drawing is an excellent way to spark children’s interest in natural science. I’m creating seminars in nature drawing for children, combining the joy of drawing with their deeply rooted love of nature.

For starters, we’ll create animal and insect drawings using basic shapes like circles, ovals and triangles. Everyone can get a feeling of accomplishment from executing a decent likeness of a mantis, ladybug, bee or beetle from basic shapes!

From there, the workshop moves on to an exploration of the building blocks of accurate drawing from nature, gesture, contour line, and shading.

The idea is, everyone can learn to draw favorite plants and animals in a 60 – 90 minute workshop, and learn techniques and the work ethic that helps improve drawing skills over time.

I’m starting a process of scheduling seminars at libraries, museums and schools. I’ll be updating this post and website with info as it becomes available. Se habla español.

Once I get rolling with the Nature Science drawing seminars for kids, I’ll look to add a Graphic Novel Workshop for ages 12 & up.

Please email me with questions, comments and queries about teaching.

Steve Lafler Graphic Novel Catalog

Welcome to the Steve Lafler / Cat-Head Comics Catalog! Here’s a great selection of my strange and wonderful graphic novels, available at my Lulu store (high-quality print-on-demand!) After the book listings, you’ll find some unique original art pieces on offer. Cheers!

I’ve reissued the Complete Dog Boy ($29.95, 488 pages) and the Complete BugHouse ($25.95, 406 pages) on my Cat-Head Comics label. Click through the links to place your order.

My pioneering Alt/UG title Dog Boy streaked across the 80s landscape leaving a trail of strong coffee and blotter acid in its wake. This freewheeling indie classic features almost 500 pages of improvised ink-slinging, executed with bravado!

Join Jimmy Watts and his band of musical bugs with BugHouse as they take jazz from the swing era into the uncharted maelstrom of Bebop. Cartoonist Steve Lafler brings it with his stylish brushwork; his depiction of the mid-twentieth century jazz world is seductive eye-candy.

Lucha Bruja ($12.50, 144 pages)

You are invited to join expats Rex and Gertie on a wild ride to the remote highland jewel of Oaxaca, Mexico. There they find Eduardo, a crafty 2000-year old Zapotec vampire who prefers chicken blood, and El Rey Pelón (the skinny, pot-bellied fungus who drives a taxi). I lived in Oaxaca from 2007 to 2016, Lucha Bruja is my takeaway fictional report on the whole experience!

Cat Suit ($5.95, 48 pages)

What kind of whack job would put on a mask and a skin-tight suit and head out into the city after midnight? I mean, what is this guy really up to? What pathology, what proclivity are we dealing with here? Is he fighting crime? Hell no, he’s just going clubbing—and he’s frankly perplexed when the barflies & drunks want to pick a fight with him.

El Vocho ($12.00, 104 pages)

Rosa the Latina hottie inventor and Eddie the geek artist meet in a fender bender. Tempers flare but sparks fly and they fall in love. Working together, they create the perfect clean energy motor while being tracked by goons working for big oil.

And here is the finished painted tabletop, depicting Ralph the drummer from my graphic novel BugHouse. This piece is available at $250 which includes packing and shipping. Gotta have it? Email me and we can work out the details!

I scored this sturdy wooden toddler rocking chair at Goodwill and painted a kitty on the back support and a happy bug on the side (in acrylic)! It’s on offer at $275. Price includes shipping/packaging. Again, simply zip an email my way and we can set up payment.

FrankenTiger shreds at the Crypt

Hey there, I’ve got a great new painting (aka “reward”) on offer at my Cat-Head Comics Reboot Kickstarter!

It is an 11″x14″ acrylic painting on canvas, FrankenTiger. The work depicts the classic Frankenstein monster from the Aurora monster model packaging of the early 1960s.

The monster is playing Tiger, Jerry Garcia’s custom guitar designed by master luthier Doug Irwin. Here it is:

If classic movie monsters playing iconic guitars is your type of think, this is the painting for you!

Cheers

Steve

Robespierre Snubs Trump at Gates of Hell

Just finished this 11″ x 14″ acrylic on canvas piece. Robespierre Snubs Trump at the Gates of Hell.

Interestingly, finished on the day Nancy Pelosi greenlighted the impeachment proceedings on Trump.

This one goes for $500. Interested? Please email Steve Lafler.

Shipped insured via Fedex.

New Painting “Paul is Dead”

Here’s a new painting with the working title “Paul is Dead”. Yeah, it is a tongue in cheek title. Here’s Dracula playing a left-handed Hofner bass, a clue to the title of the work for sure! 11″ x 14″ acrylic painting.

I’d offered this piece here for sale, and BOOM! SOLD (in one day).

More paintings are on the way.

Meanwhile, I’m offering a Paul is Dead T-Shirt from my Redbubble store, just click this link.

Steve Lafler Catalog Update Fall 2019

Hey there, welcome! You are invited to sample my graphic novels, art and T-Shirts. Let’s get started with a few of my favorites…

My latest graphic novel is Lucha Bruja, inspired by my decade-long stint of living in the magical city of Oaxaca, Mexico.

Steve Lafler is different. He’s not content to flip the same burger over and over with different toppings. His worldview is wide open and that everything-goes approach is alive and well in his wonderful new project/object, Lucha Bruja.”

– Stephen Beaupre, editor of Buzzard Comics anthology

You can order your copy of Lucha Bruja direct from Amazon for $14.99.

BugHouse is my best known graphic novel, an insect noir narrative of be-boppin’ bugs, set in a fictional Manhattan of the early 1950s. Inspired by the music of Miles Davis and the cryptic yet lively writings of William S. Burroughs, BugHouse offers a ride like no other graphic novel.

I’m going to recommend a graphic novel that is great because it is good, solid and delivers in spades what I most enjoy in a comic book; a comfortable mastery of the form, fun, surprises, a story I can get into and a light touch. In short its the kind of book you can flop down on the couch with of an afternoon, lie back and enjoy.”

Jim Woodring, commenting on BugHouse for Boing Boing

BugHouse is available at my LULU store for $14.99.
Note: Click through to show you are old enough for this “mature” book.

Benb T-Shirt. Benb is the “happy guy”. He is a complete bumbler, yet he lives a charmed life! Like a cat, he always lands on his feet.

Order your Benb T from my Redbubble shop.

Original Art! I have several key pieces of cover art on offer. You can email or call me if interested. Shipped insured.
